Public Transport

The only available option for public transport to us from the airport is with a taxi. There is a taxi booth right outside the arrivals hall at the airport. Tell them that you want to go to Coconut Bay in West Bay and they will instruct you. They will give you a ticket with the destination and fare on it. As long as you do not tell the driver to divert from his route, this will be the fare you pay to the taxi driver. Some taxis are minibuses, so if you are a large group with luggage you will need one of those.

The fare for 1-3 passengers, each with up to 2 pieces of luggage will be around $30 CI ( $37.50 US). Extra luggage is $1 CI ($1.25 US) per piece. For four or more passengers the fare is $40 CI ($50 US).

Rental Car

There are many car rental options at the airport. All are very high quality and give excellent service. We recommend checking with them and finding out which company has the best deal for the type of car you require during your stay. We strongly recommend booking before your arrival.

Car rental offices are not in the airport building directly, but close by. What we have found works for us is if the drivers leave the rest of the party with luggage outside the arrivals hall and go to the office and complete the paperwork and fetch the car, which they then bring around to the arrivals area to load up the luggage.

In the Cayman Islands we drive on the left-hand side of the road, which can require some adjustment for those not used to it. Most people adapt quickly. We recommend picking up driving information and a map from the rental office.

The Cayman Islands will also require each driver to buy a Cayman Driver's permit, which costs around $16 CI ($20 US) and is valid for 6 months. Alternatively you may obtain an International Driver's License from your home country, which is valid for a year. In the USA this is available from AAA and costs $15 plus the cost of a passport picture. In Canada this is obtainable from CAA.
